This course takes middle school students on an engaging journey through Florida’s rich and diverse history, from its earliest inhabitants to its modern-day significance. Students will explore the cultural, economic, social, and political developments that have shaped the Sunshine State.
Topics include:
Indigenous Cultures: Study the lives and legacies of Florida’s first peoples, such as the Timucua, Calusa, and Seminole tribes.
Colonial Florida: Examine the impact of Spanish, French, and British colonization on the state’s development.
Statehood and Growth: Explore Florida’s path to statehood, the Civil War’s influence, and its role in the Reconstruction era.
Economic Evolution: Learn about industries like agriculture, tourism, and space exploration that have fueled Florida’s economy.
Cultural Diversity: Celebrate the diverse communities and immigrant groups that contribute to Florida’s unique identity.
Environmental Heritage: Understand the significance of Florida’s ecosystems, from the Everglades to its coastlines, and the ongoing efforts to preserve them.
Through interactive projects, primary source analysis, and field studies, students will gain a deeper appreciation for Florida’s history and its role in the broader context of the United States and the world.
Refund Policy
EMA Direct-Pay Funds: Payments made using EMA direct-pay funds are non-refundable once processed. However, credit will be issued toward future classes.
Full Refunds: Cancellations made at least 4 weeks prior to the class start date are eligible for a full refund.
Filling Your Spot: If you cancel within 4 weeks of the class start date and your spot is successfully filled, a full refund will be issued.
Partial Refunds: Cancellations made between 2 and 4 weeks prior to the class start date are eligible for a 50% refund.
No Refunds: Cancellations made during the semester are not eligible for refunds.
